Midway Island
Midway Atoll, also known as Midway Island, is a significant atoll located in the North Pacific Ocean, approximately 2268 km (1409 mi) flying distance from Hawaii. Covering an area of around 6 km² (2.5 mi²) with a population of under 100 people, including staff of US Fish and Wildlife Service and contract workers. It is an unincorporated U.S. territory, uniquely following Samoa Time. Midway Atoll National Wildlife Refuge, spanning over 2392 km² (923 mi²), is managed by the US Fish and Wildlife Service. Formerly housing Naval Air Facility Midway until 1993, the atoll played a pivotal role in WWII, notably during the Battle of Midway. Presently, visits to the atoll are limited to business purposes only, with a focus on military history and ecology. The atoll boasts a self-sustaining hydroponic greenhouse for fresh produce and serves as a crucial breeding ground for several seabird species, including globally significant populations of Laysan and black-footed albatrosses.
