Qaanaaq, formerly known as Thule, is the main town in the northern part of Avannaata municipality in northwestern Greenland. It is one of the northernmost towns in the world, with a population of 646 as of 2020. The town was forcibly relocated from its traditional home in 1953 due to the construction of a United States Air Force base. Qaanaaq is known for its Inuktun-speaking inhabitants, original hunting culture, and arts and crafts. Activities include hunting trips, visits to the unique settlement at Siorapaluk, and exploring the area's breathtaking natural beauty. The town has a local school, hospital, and basic medical services. Transportation is mainly by air, with Air Greenland operating flights to various destinations. The climate in Qaanaaq is cold tundra, with long, cold winters and short, cool summers.
