Surtsey Island, located approximately 32 km south of the Icelandic coast, is a new volcanic island formed by eruptions that occurred from 1963 to 1967. Designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, Surtsey provides a unique natural laboratory, showcasing the colonization process of new land by plant and animal life. Since its formation, scientists have observed a diverse range of flora and fauna gradually establishing on the island. With over 60 vascular plant species, 75 bryophytes, 71 lichens, and 24 fungi, Surtsey has become a living study of ecological development. The island is also home to 89 bird species, 57 of which breed in other parts of Iceland. In addition, Surtsey boasts a rich diversity of invertebrate species, totaling 335. Visitors to Surtsey can witness the ongoing ecological processes and unique biodiversity in this pristine natural setting.
